At the FBI office, Larry walks around, stressed. Sean stops him and lets him know they found the truck that they believe the Matobo’s were kidnapped in. It was abandoned atthe air field. They can’t track anything yet. Moss wants them to search the truck and he heads away. Janice stops him and tells him that she is trying to backtrack the firewall breach and she found a code fragment. Using it she might be able to tell where it came from. Moss doesn’t want to waste personnel on this. She promises to drop it the minute it feels cold. Moss takes off and Sean slides over next to Janice asking if she thinks he is up to running this place. Janice figure Larry is fine, and she was the one that told Sean about Larry and Renee. Sean thinks that this is hitting Larry pretty hard but Janice shuts down the idea. If she doesn’t think Larry can do his job, she will let Sean know. In the mean time, she wants him to open a socket. She shoves him away in his chair toward his station.
Kanin is on the phone and there is no answer on the other end. As the phone he is calling rings we see the First Gentleman and Agent Gitch both unconscious. Kanin has reached the voicemail for Brian Gitch and he leaves an angry message that he wants to speak to Henry ASAP. Kanin has a call coming in, it’s Agent Moss from the FBI. Moss fills Kanin in about the vehicle but they still have no time frame on when they might have this under control. Kanin is angry that’s not good enough. If they get hit again a lot of people are going to die. Larry doesn’t need to be told what’s at stake, they’re doing everything they can and one agent has already given their life. Kanin’s demeanour changes and he says he’s been told about that. He wants Larry to call when he has something. Kanin will wait for his call. Larry puts the phone down in his office and wipes his hands over his face.
From the back of the newest, black Buchanan-mobile Chloe gives the address for the Matobo’s. Buchanan drives and Tony rides shotgun as they drive by the building, it is four stories and it was built 2 years ago. In the back with Chloe, Jack and Renee talk. Jack is going to need Renee’s help.
In the building, Matobo is led into the darkened room that Dubaku and Nicholls have been commanding from. Nicholls is also with Matobo as well as the other thug. The guy working on the computer tells Dubaku that they are able to take control of the main tank at the plant and cause the safety valves to fail. Dubaku sees Matobo in the room and approaches him asking if he remembers the last time they saw each other. They had dinner at Matobo’s house and they shared an excellent bottle of wine. Dubaku claims to have offered his hand in friendship but Matobo slapped it away. Matobo saw it as an ultimatum. Dubaku thinks it could have been a long and prosperous career as the Prime Minister but now he will go back to Sangala a traitor. Matobo says that it is Dubaku and Juma that are the traitors. Dubaku is going to have Matobo sent back to Sangala and he will give Juma the names off all the traitors he is working with. Matobo swears he will never do that. Dubaku leers at Matobo’s wife and Matobo follows his gaze. Dubaku tells him, “Believe me, you will.” He gives the order for them to be taken away and they are taken out of the room. Nicholls asks if there has been a response from the President. Dubaku says not yet, but when she sees dead Americans lying in the streets she will be less stubborn.
Buchanan stops the van and they all pile out. Renee heads inside first and goes to the front desk. Outside, Jack asks Chloe if Matobo is inside. She sees through the tracker that he has been moved but she’s not sure where to. Jack, Tony and Buchanan go upstairs and across the roof of the building. Renee heads over to the desk and tells the man that she is going to see Mr. Ronin of Ronin and Associates. He will call up but she flashes her badge and says she is there on official business, as far as he knows, she was never there. She goes to the elevator and Jack is on the way to the service entrance with Buchanan and Tony in tow. Renee gets off at level 3 and Chloe lets her know the law firm is on the left and also where the room where Matobo was being held and the location of the stairs. Renee heads to the stairs and goes up. Jack, Tony and Buchanan slowly make their way to the door, guns out and checking every corner. Jack tells them they’re at the door. Renee opens it from the inside and the three of them are waiting. Once they are in and the door’s closed Renee leads them back down and says there’s one guard outside the suite and he’s probably armed. Renee and Jack leave the stairwell on the 4 th floor and Buchanan and Tony are sent down to 3 to wait for the signal. Renee and Jack are directed to an empty room and Jack throws the door open and aims his gun low while Renee takes the high end. Chloe explains that the room used to be a computer room and there are panels in the middle of the room that will give them access to the crawl space. Jack pulls open the floor tile and Renee watches the door. Jack sees the space and puts the flashlight in his mouth and lowers himself into the space. Renee comes down after Jack and he tells Chloe that they are in.
One of the thugs leads the Matobo’s into a room and shuts the door. Ule turns to his wife and worries that he never should have allowed her to come with him, it was a mistake. She comforts her husband and assures him that Jack Bauer will be there soon.
Jack works his way through the vents with Renee in tow and Chloe gives them directions to the air duct they need to find. She tells him that Matobo is in an adjacent room off the main area.
The FBI says that the NSA is combing the firewall looking for the breach and Sean makes a comment which Janice tells him she can live without his negativity. She finds something in a code fragment, Kidron, Ohio. They check the homeland database and they find nothing target-worthy in Kidron itself but Sean and Janice notice simultaneously that the next county houses Boyd Chemical. They find that they make insecticide and Janice asks Sean’s for the phone number.
Janice makes the call and asks the person answering the phone to speak to the plant manager immediately. From Janice’s side only we wait for a pause and she asks, ‘I’m with the FBI, does that sound vaguely important to you?’ Sean gives her the name of the manager and so she asks to speak directly to John Brunner. Janice is connected and she ID’s herself to Brunner. Janice quickly explains what they have found and John tells her that he knows what the CIP firewall does. John is indeed having a problem with his tanks. He tells her that they are an insecticide plant and the tanks contain highly toxic material. Janice has reason to believe that this is a terrorist attack on their facility. She wants him to start their emergency shutdown procedures and to stay on the line. John goes over to his techies and tells them to shut down the tanks. The tanks are not responding, they have tried and are getting nothing. They see the pressure in the tank is rising. Janice is back and John says he can’t shut down the tanks. If they can’t stop this they are looking at an atmospheric release of the chemicals. Janice wants Larry, they need to alert the President. Janice tells John to evacuate their people now.

Kanin hangs up off the phone with Moss and Tim comes in. They discuss the plant problem. Tim asks if the First Gentleman has spoken with the President and Kanin says not yet. Kanin spoke with Agent Gitch 40 minutes ago. They agree that Henry is the only one that can talk the President out of this and they need him. Kanin is waiting for a call back.
Taylor’s assistant reads a speech back to her and they discuss the use of the word ‘outrage’. Taylor reminds her that these people have killed 300 Americans and they don’t know hat else they have planned. There is a knock on the door and Taylor calls to come in. It’s Kanin and he asks the speech writer for them to be excused. Tim is also there and Taylor asks what is going on. They tell her that the FBI has detected the next attack. They show Taylor on her TV the chemical plant and they tell her all about the attack. The effects of the concentrated insecticide are lung damage and chemical burns to the skin. It will be released in less than 15 minutes and the population of Kidron is 30,000. Taylor sees that the stats are showing over 17,000 causalities, that’s more than 50%. She asks if that is right. They confirm that it is. Right now their only chance of stopping this is finding Dubaku and the chip. She looks at them and leaves the room.
Jack works on the vent and says that they are ready. Chloe tells Jack through his earpiece that she intercepted some information from the FBI. She tells Jack about the plant and the town. Jack is moving as fast as he can. Jack is prepared and asks Renee for the scope. He slides it through the vent and turns it on. Jack wants the night vision on and he sees Dubaku and Nicholls on the screen. He tells them that they have 3 men with weapons and 3 more at the workstation, likely armed. Tony copies this information, Jack has Dubaku in the room.
Back at the FBI they are doing everything they can to plug the firewall leak. Moss asks what is going on the plant and stands over the workers. Janice is on with John and asks if he tried another way of stopping the system. John is headed down the stairs and tells Janice, ‘Three times, honey.’ Janice tells him that she doesn’t usually let people call her honey, he tells her she needs to lighten up. He wants to try the main pressure release valve. It won’t stop the release but it will buy them some more time. There are 1000 people working at the plant and John is responsible for their safety. He asks Janice to stay on the phone with him, he will need her help with the tank override. Once he is ready he asks her for the emergency valve release sequence. Janice doesn’t want to give it to him, it will release the chemicals into the tank where he is. John has respiratory gear, he will be fine. He puts the mask over his face and after some discussion about his safety with Janice she gives him the sequence for the release as 2, 8, 7, 4, 3. He heads to a valve behind him and after a struggle the big wheel turns. The pressure is released into where he is and that is one down, three to go.
Dubaku and Nicholls are still working in their space and Nicholls calls Dubaku over. He points at a monitor and says they have a problem. The footage of Jack, Tony and Buchanan entering shows and Nicholls ID’s Jack and Tony. Dubaku is angry, he thought they were dead and wants to know how they found them. Nicholls claims to not know. One of the thugs reports that the PSI is rising but Dubaku wants the CIP disengaged. Nicholls argues and wants to know why he is doing this. Dubaku will continue from another location. Nicholls just wants to finish but the CIP is disengaged.
At the FBI, Sean detects that the breach has been closed. Moss wants to know what he is talking about and Sean repeats himself. Moss asks if NSA could have closed the breach and Sean doesn’t know.
Dubaku tells one of his men to bring the module and another to get Matobo and his wife.
Jack radios Buchanan and Tony to go to the main entrance, they can enter from there. Jack asks Renee to get the C4 from his bag. Tony and Buchanan storm the front doors and shots rung out. Jack and Renee get out of the vent and the gunfight rages on. Renee, Jack, Tony and Buchanan rack up the kills from either end of the room. In the midst of it, Dubaku sends one of his men for the device. He heads out to get it and quickly gets killed by Tony. Dubaku realizes he has lost and takes off away from the fighters. Jack kills the last of the men in his sights and calls clear. Buchanan and Tony come out sweeping the area and they don’t have Dubaku. Tony sees the CIP chip on the ground and tells the others it has been destroyed. He picks it up and pockets it. Renee has the Matobo’s and she is taking them to the van.

Janice is on the phone and asks if John is still there. She explains that the terrorists are out of the system and she wants to know what’s happening over there. John is continuing the shutdown but the pressure is dropping. He thinks they will be alright. Janice wants John to get out of there right now. John is sitting on the floor and tries to get up but instead he coughs and sputters. Janice calls to John and he can’t make it to the door. Janice calls in the security team and she wants him to stay with her.
Outside Dubaku’s building people exit on mass as the Matobo’s and Renee load the black van. She looks over Chloe’s shoulder and asks if they found Dubaku. They are searching but the first responders are 5 minutes away. Jack copies, Tony and Buchanan clear a room. Dubaku goes into the room where he has been keeping Latham and tells him to get up. Latham looks marginally better than we last saw him but he doesn’t want to do what he is told. Dubaku slams Latham to the wall.
Jack is ahead of Tony and Buchanan and they work through the building.
Latham begs Dubaku not to make him do this. Dubaku threatens Latham’s wife and daughter saying that he will make his wife watch as he kills Latham’s daughter. Latham nods.
Jack, Tony and Buchanan continue through the building. Tony gets to a door first and through a series of nods, Jack goes through first with Buchanan and Tony in tow. Tony identifies Latham standing in the middle of the room and they want to know where Dubaku is. Latham says he’s sorry and Jack looks him over seeing the wire running just under his shirt. Jack yells ‘Cover!’ and all 3 of them back out of the room just as the bomb explodes. Jack was pushed forward on the tile by the force of the blast and he checks his gun as he rolls over and yells for Tony and then Bill. They are all alright and Renee is calling for Jack over the comm. After a pause Jack tells her that Latham was wired with explosives. They don’t have Dubaku. They want to continue the search for Dubaku but with Chloe and Renee’s prodding they agree to get out. The entire plan will be destroyed if they are arrested.
Dubaku is seen melding in with the other building workers and he walks right out the front door.
At the FBI Moss says the NSA and Homeland have no reason why the attack was suddenly stopped. Janice is coordinating with a forensic team and they don’t know why it stopped. It could have been a malfunction but Janice has no answers for Moss. He continues to snap at her and Janice doesn’t know what else to tell him. She knows he is upset about Renee but this will not make go any faster. Moss argues that it’s not about Agent Walker, the thousands of lives at stake is what is worrying him. Moss assigns Janice and Sean to work with NSA. Moss turns to his computer and there is Renee’s ‘Agent Missing’ alert on the screen.
Janice gets off the phone and wants Sean to interface with the NSA code. Sean is on the phone, he is talking to the plant. The facility is clean and there was only one casualty, the plant manager. Janice says his name, John Brunner. Janice asks Sean for a favour, Sean says it’s depends. She asks him to track down John’s family. She was the last one to speak to him and she wants to let them know how brave he was. Sean warns that before she starts sending flowers she needs to find the CIP module. Janice is on it.

Tim tells the President and Kanin about the cleanup in Kidron. There are 13 workers being treated for toxic fumes and 1 casualty. They discuss the CIP device and why they stopped the attack. It can’t be another warning shot since he crashed the two planes and he is not afraid to take more lives. They are grateful the attacks have stopped but Taylor is not going to be happy until she knows why. Admiral Smith is on the phone wanting to speak to the President. Tim leaves and finds Kanin on the phone. He is still trying to reach Henry and no one is picking up. Kanin tells the person on the phone that he doesn’t care who they have to pull off shift, they need to find Gitch. Kanin wants to tell the President about this but Tim thinks they should hold off until the threat is lifted. Kanin doesn’t listen and just keeps going back to the office. Taylor finishes on the phone and Kanin needs to talk to her about her husband. He will not let his theory about their son’s death go. Taylor asks what Kanin is talking about and Kanin explains that he was harassing Roger’s girlfriend about Roger’s death. Henry was over at her apartment because there was a PI feeding his theory, Kanin figures he was taking advantage of him. Taylor wants Henry on the phone but Kanin says he is unreachable. Taylor doesn’t understand and Kanin says he is not answering. Kanin has contacted Secret Service and put out an APB. They are going to Roth’s apartment and whatever is going on they will find out soon enough.
The other agent with Gitch, Vossler, is calling his cell again. The address he is at is given out over the radio, they are looking for Gitch.
Gitch’s cell phone is ringing inside Roth’s apartment and after a lot of rings Henry finally stirs. He rolls over and sees Gitch. He looks almost surprised as he tries to move away and then he takes the phone. He opens the phone and it shows missed calls from Vossler. Henry wants to make a call but he needs the pass code to unlock the phone. He gets up and is still a little heavy on his feet. He sees Samantha on the ground in a pool of blood and looks like he just might be sick but then heads for the door. Henry gets it open and sees Vossler coming at him. He slams the door closed and tries to lock it. Vossler kicks the door open and Henry is working on getting Gitch’s gun but Vossler gets to him first. Henry tries to bargain for his life saying that Vossler hasn’t killed anyone yet, he doesn’t need to do this. If he kills Henry now it will be murder and they will trace it back to him. Vossler has his gun trained on Henry and his cell phone rings. Vossler answers it and it’s Dubaku who is riding the subway. Vossler explains that Gitch is dead, somehow Taylor managed to kill him. Dubaku wants Vossler to bring Henry to him.

Back at “CTU”, Jack leads the Matobo’s upstairs and Buchanan gives Chloe a list of instructions to try and find Dubaku, including satellite. Chloe is going to need 20 minutes to patch the satellite. Buchanan also wants her to look into traffic cam, street corners and some other items. Chloe snaps she can’t do all of that so Buchanan tells her to do the satellites. Jack says that the police are going to be after them, their cover is blown and they are not equipped to find one man in a city of millions. Jack suggests that they work with an outside agency. Tony and Buchanan both agree that they can’t trust anyone on the outside. Matobo knows that Taylor can be trusted but Buchanan doesn’t know about the people around her. Chloe agrees that they need help, Jack figures that Matobo can get past Taylor’s inner circle and they can let her in on what they are doing and why. Renee agrees with this and Matobo wants to know what he is supposed to do, hide and play dead? Tony looks sceptical but Matobo wants to return to the White House and help what is left of his country. Matobo urges them to let him call. Jack stands firm with Matobo, they can find Dubaku. Buchanan looks to Tony before making the final decision. Tony nods. Buchanan says to get the White House. Tony looks down at the ground.

Taylor watches the goings on in Kidron and her phone rings. The voice says she has Prime Minister Matobo calling. Taylor wants a trace but they are calling on a secure line. She picks up and Ule is indeed on the other end, along with Jack listening through a headset. He says they are alright, he and his wife were rescued and they are at a safe place. He wants her to listen to him, the people that rescued him have recovered the CIP device, it is destroyed and is no longer a threat. Taylor wants to know who they are and Matobo promises to tell them everything in person. They must meet privately and they are going to bring Matobo to her. They will arrive in 10 minutes. Taylor will be waiting for him and she hangs up. Jack says they tried to trace the line but it held.
Taylor calls Kanin into her office and says that she just spoke to Matobo. He is safe and he will tell her what happened when he gets there. She wants Kanin to get him into the south entrance and as few people as possible need to know. Kanin leaves.
Chloe has a route to the White House using side streets so they will avoid cameras. They are going to move the van to the front of the building and then Renee can bring Matobo down. Jack and Buchanan head down the stairs and Tony calls out to Jack. Jack turns on the landing to face Tony who says, ‘I’m not going.’ Tony comes down the stairs and Buchanan explains that if the government gets their hands on Tony, they’ll arrest him. Unhappily, Tony tells Jack, “I told you, I did some pretty bad things before I started working with Bill.” Jack tries to convince him saying that he should take it from him, he needs to deal with the consequences. Tony is not going to do that until they have found Dubaku. Tony knows someone in Emerson’s crew that might have some intel they can use. Buchanan encourages Jack to let him do it. Jack says fine, but he wants Tony’s word that he will give himself up when this is finished and he and Bill will stand behind him. Tony gives Jack his word and reaches out to shake his hand. Jack tells Tony good luck, ‘and be careful.’ Tony watches Buchanan and Jack leave down the stairs and looks away.
In the split screen we see Matobo, Dubaku heading into an apartment, Henry getting loaded into Vossler’s trunk, Renee and Matobo heading down the stairs.
Dubaku is in his apartment and he takes his jacket off. There’s a knock at the door and he gets his gun and heads to the glass topped door. The opens it and a woman on the other side wears a waitress uniform and a name tag that says Marika. She was on her way to work and tried calling but Dubaku has been busy. He has had a long day and they talk about dinner. She is making lasagne and promises that her sister will not give him any more dirty looks. He agrees but has some business to attend to. She calls him Samuel and says he works too much, whenever she sees him in the diner he is on the phone. He claims to be on the phone working to take him away from that awful place she works in. She reminds him that they met in that awful place. They kiss and he closes the door. Dubaku puts the gun down and makes a call. Vossler is 3 minutes away and Dubaku says there is a Korean grocer across from his place. He will send some men down and he needs to bring Taylor inside. Dubaku tells him to make sure he’s not followed.

Miscellaneous Thoughts:

-Is it just me or did we not see Nicholls on the phone to Dubaku in the previously. We heard the conversation but I don’t think we saw Nicholls ‘cause he was on the road.
-You know it’s a bad sign when Jack is not the last, or even the 2 nd to last box on the previouslys. He’s the 3 rd to last, him, Tony then Dubaku. Seriously?
-Pacing Larry is starting to get on my nerves.
-Finally, after all these years we get some fun with the rolling chairs. Janice pushes Sean away. I’ve worked in an office with those things and there were ALWAYS people doing weird things including launching themselves forward by pushing the wrong lever and sinking each other’s chairs with their feet on the lever.
-Brian Gitch. Hmm, it just doesn’t seem right.
-On the name front, I noticed a ‘Latham’ in the credits. Editor I think. I know they do that all the time on this show.
-Not too long ago Larry was bitching out Sean because they don’t know for sure that Renee is dead and now he’s all cool with it with Kanin.
-I must have missed the Buchanan-mobile change. It thought they would be in the blue one. They can’t be that low budget if they can afford 2 vehicles. That must be quite the insurance fee. I can just see it, “Primary use: Stopping Terrorism” Highest ever premium.
-Might not be the best idea for Tony to ride shotgun. He is, after all, wanted eight ways from Sunday. Although, Jack is wanted, Renee is presumed dead and the Matobo’s are supposed to be kidnapped. They’re just screwed aren’t they, unless Chloe rides shotgun, but she can’t get any work done that way.
-You know, I like Tim. Due to that, I’m betting he’s the mole.
-Like Pacing Larry, I’m also getting frustrated of Pacing Ethan (Kanin that is)
-I do however like angry Kanin. He’s good when he’s ticked off.
-It might be just me but since Matobo isn’t the one blowing up innocents, I believe his side of the dinner story.
-Talk about the 24 Dream Team. Jack, Tony and Buchanan in the field together. Unreal. It’s like they have been listening to us all along. Even Chloe as part of it is good. I can’t think of any 3 people that I would rather see work together. I’m sad at the end of the episode when Tony parts ways with them because it was such a great hour for that.
-I find that the character of Renee is better when she is with Jack. I’m NOT saying I want them together or anything like that. All I’m saying is that I find her to be a better actress when she is working with Kiefer. When she’s not, she gets on my nerves a little bit.
-Personally, I rather would have had Jack and Tony together, but I know that Jack would want Renee close at hand to protect her.
-That’s quite the big empty room Jack and Renee are in. It seems kind of weird, I dunno.
-Something about Matobo’s wife saying, “Jack Bauer will be here soon” just made me laugh. Even she believes in the power of Bauer.
-John Brunner – this guy is a great actor. The role I remember him in most was Without A Trace when he played Barry Mashburn, a man who kidnaps his deceased wife’s boss after she dies in the 9/11 attacks. He was the central character in a 2 part episode and stole many a scene. He also has an extensive list of TV credits.
-It’s good that Chloe can get into the FBI mainframe. You know she could probably get into ATC without the CIP device. Or make her own.
-I agree with John, Janice needs to lighten up. The guy is like, minutes away from dying. Cut him some slack.
-So, Brunner runs the plant, he knows what the chemicals do including burns to the skin and he continues on with no protective gear other than the mask. Brilliant.
-Seeing Jack, Tony and Buchanan working together is just as exciting on the black and white monitor that Nicholls sees it on.
-I can’t believe that Nicholls wants them to stay and finish the attack. Does he really think they are going to be able to hold Jack off?
-I’m not convinced that the device is actually broken. Tony was the only one that saw it and he picked it up and pocketed it all suspiciously. This could be great leverage for him to get away later, and hopefully take Jack with him.
-7 episodes in and we are finally seeing the explosion where Jack slides along the ground like that. We’ve been seeing that footage for a year and a half now and there it is.
-Ah, so that’s where Latham went. He’s literally been locked in the back room for 8 hours. Convenient.
-Jack certainly took the brunt of the explosion, as usual.
-Convenient exit for Dubaku. Hopefully he is picked up on the cameras and the FBI catches him.
-Sweet that Moss has the alert for Renee up on his screen.
-Okay, is it Kidon pronounced Kid-rOn or Kid-rin. I’d go for Kid-rin, but the President says Ron so, you know, she is the boss.
-Well, at least someone got a nap during this day. Taylor was out for almost an hour, that’s more sleep than anyone on this show has had in a long time, and it’s only the afternoon. Albeit, it was a drug-induced sleep, but sleep nonetheless.
-I know it’s wrong, but Henry’s walk to the door was so funny I actually laughed. He just looks so rough. It was, however, very well acted. The whole thing.
-After Buchanan being the calm and collected one, he snaps at Chloe about tech stuff. Gunfights, terrorists, he’s cool. Tech problems and he looses his shit.
-Shocking, Chloe sides with Jack.
-I think it was wrong for Matobo to sound so angry when he asked if he was supposed to stay in hiding and play dead. They did do him a favour after all, sort of.
-It’s nice how Buchanan checks with Tony before making the decision about contacting Taylor. Ultimately, it effects him the most.
-Is Taylor sure she can trust Kanin? He is pretty hell bent on getting the troops out of Sangala.
-Hopefully we do get to hear about these ‘pretty bad things’ that Tony did. I’m curious how this will tie into the rest of the season and if it will play a role. Tony is obviously not proud of what he’s done, especially now that he’s faced with the potential wrath of Jack.
-I really really hope that Tony stays good. I can see some light at the end of the tunnel here for Jack, he can go with Tony and actually have a friend once it’s all over. If they brought him back just to kill him again I am going to be one pissed off viewer, no matter how it affects Jack.
-That is one safe apartment that Dubaku lives in, you know, with the glass door.
-I’m laying bets right now that Dubaku’s girlfriends sister is someone that we already know.
-I’m also laying bets that I will not enjoy this storyline one single bit.
