On a TV a reporter talks about the attack on the White House. Watching the newscast is Vice President Hayworth and he is told that the VP is not in the White House, he was sent to a secured location. Derek says he just got off the phone with Agent Moss, they want to start the rescue operation. They have no more intel on the situation. They sent out two units with parabolics but all they are getting is static. They are jamming the signals. There are spotters at every possible angle and they are not seeing anything inside. They don’t know if Juma has the President of if she is locked in the safe room. Hayworth will not authorize any action until he is sure that the President is safe. He asks Derek to relay that to Moss.

Juma’s men pace around the White House. Olivia sits near her mother and apologizes for cutting her out of her life. Taylor says it’s okay, it wasn’t right for her to fire her off the campaign either. Jack sits with the other hostages, next to Buchanan and near Meyer. Back with the President, Olivia says that it all seems so stupid now and asks her mother to forgive her. Taylor did that a long time ago. They both lean in and are head to head for a second. While close, Taylor whispers for Olivia to listen to her, she needs to keep her eyes open and be ready. Olivia is scared. Juma comes over and wants the President. She is hauled up and Olivia yells for Juma to leave her alone. Taylor assures her daughter it will be okay.

While Juma is busy, Jack leans in to Buchanan and whispers that they have to make a move to save the President. He explains while they were in the lockdown room he came across 5 canisters of CH4. Jack opened the valves and soon that room will be saturated in gas and it will just take 1 spark to set it off. The explosion should be large enough to take out most of Juma’s men. Buchanan asks how Jack will set it off and he says that he is going to make a run for the lockdown room and draw fire. It will only take 1 stray bullet to set off the explosion. Buchanan is worried, it’s a suicide play. Jack figures it’s their only move. Once he triggers the explosion, he wants Buchanan to get the President out of there. Senator Meyer nearby has been watching Jack and Buchanan talk. He leans in and demands to know what they are talking about and if they are planning something. Jack tells him coldly that when it happens, he’ll know about it. He continues to protest and Jack simply tells him to shut up.

Juma has a folded piece of paper and tells Taylor that it’s a statement outlining the atrocities that she has committed. She is going to read it and it will be seen by the whole world. Taylor calmly agrees that she will read the statement if Juma releases the hostages. Juma got what he came for; he has the President of the United States. Juma agrees that in good faith he will release one hostage. The President looks on as Juma’s men pull a random hostage out of the group. Jack also watches closely as Juma methodically leads the hostage over near the President and then pulls his gun out and shoots the hostage in the head. Hostages scream and Taylor looks away. The camera flashes to Jack looking down, Buchanan and Meyer. Juma asks her dangerously, ‘Do you want me to release any more hostages, President Taylor?’ Taylor calls Juma a son of a bitch. Juma threatens that the President is to read the statement or he will do the same thing to everyone there, starting with her daughter. Juma’s tech says that the uplink is complete. Taylor is given the paper and Juma says the world is waiting. Olivia continues to look worried. Taylor looks to Jack briefly who shakes his head no. Taylor starts the statement by identifying herself and speaking about the invasion of Sangala saying it was a criminal act motivated by their hunger for power.

Vice President Hayworth tells his minions he wants the feed shut down. They can’t do it, it’s coming from multiple servers and it would take hours to just trace it. The phone rings, Derek answers it and then puts it on hold. He tells Hayworth that Moss wants him on the teleconference. Moss asks if Hayworth is getting this, which he is as well as the rest of the world. Moss believes that Juma came here to humiliate the President and then stage a public execution. They need to move in. Hayworth argues they don’t know his intentions and he wants to get his demands. FBI says there are no demands. Hayworth’s advisors are telling him to try and initiate communication but Hayworth is told that Juma has not responded. They are going to kill the President. Renee says there’s a tactical plan in place, it is a two pronged assault and it stands a good chance of catching Juma off guard. Hayworth cannot authorize any action that might result in the President’s death. They are to hold their position until he tells him otherwise.

Jack is preparing to initiate the movement, he tells Buchanan to be ready. Bill leans in and tells Jack that Juma is not solely coordinating this attack. He heard him on the sat phone coordinating with someone on the outside who was giving him real time intel. Jack asks if Bill thinks it’s someone in the White House. Buchanan doesn’t know but even if they take Juma down the President may still be in danger. Bill meets Jack’s eyes and then says, “You’re the only one I know that can do this Jack. Find out who Juma’s working with.” Jack looks at Bill for a few seconds and a faint realization crosses his face immediately before Buchanan gets up and takes off. Jack tries to stop him and manages to get a touch of his shirt but Buchanan is too fast. Someone yells for Buchanan to sit back down as he goes for the man in the doorway of the lockdown room. He wrestles him to the floor and comes back with the commandos’ pistol. Sitting in the doorway Buchanan points the gun up and fires. Everyone is blown back including the front hostages. The lights go out in the White House.

Outside, Hovis and his team are there and call Moss with the info. Moss tells Hayworth that there has been an explosion and they are moving in on the White House on his authority. The VP continues to yell to Moss that he is not to go, it’s not his decision. Moss and Renee leave anyway.

In the White House shooting commences. Jack jumps over a body and gets a gun before someone shoots at him. Jack uses the body for cover. In a break in the fire he yells, “Pierce, get to the President!” Pierce gets a gun and heads to Taylor and Olivia while Jack uses his ammo up and goes for another gun.

Pierce finds Taylor and kneels. He says they need to get out of there right now; she is to go with him. In the split screen, Jack kills another of Juma’s men.

The FBI has entered and works their way up the corridors.

Many of Juma’s men are dead but he is still alive.

Pierce tells the President to get down and stay low until he knows they are clear. She covers Olivia and they sink to the floor. A commando comes around the corner and Pierce kills him. Taylor looks up.

Juma tells one of his remaining soldiers to kill the hostages. The President is his. They both get up and Juma tries to raise Uru. The man with Juma comes out toward the hostages behind Jack while he is still using the dead soldier for cover. Senator Meyer sees the commando and gets up on his knees yelling, “No!” Jack is drawn by the noise and quickly turns and double taps the commando saving Meyer. Jack gets up and goes to where Juma is still on the ground. Jack yells for him not to move, he has his gun out and is closing in on him. Juma has his arms spread but after a pause he goes for his gun. Jack shoots him in the neck, above the vest and Juma falls at Jack’s feet.

The FBI are coming through the White House still killing commandos. They arrive where Meyer is on his knees and Jack sees them as well. He yells that they are clear and then repeats it getting on his knees and putting his gun down. Pierce yells from around the corner, ‘Secret Service, I have the President!’ Taylor and Olivia are crouched on the floor and once the FBI is there, Pierce gets Taylor up and they head away.

The FBI is done clearing Jack and he turns his attention to the explosion site. He gets up from his knees and slowly walks towards it. The room is a mess and Bill’s body lay not too far from the door frame. Jack walks and is focused intently on it. The FBI leads Pierce, Taylor and Olivia around the corner and through where the hostages were kept. Moss calls Taylor and tells them on his radio that they have the President. Jack doesn’t even look as Moss leads her away. Renee glances and then looks again at Jack. He has made his way to the doorway to the saferoom and Buchanan’s body. Jack leans over and then uses the wall to guide himself to the ground. He puts his hand over his head.

Renee looks on and Moss calls her in a panic. He says they have to get the President out of there now. Renee looks back at Jack but then has no choice but to follow Moss. A crew of people bring the President and the hostages out. Taylor comforts Olivia that it’s alright.

With all the running going on around him, Jack still sits in the doorway, knees up, not far from Buchanan’s body. He covers his eyes with his hand and then his mouth. Jack blinks heavily and stares at Bill. We see a close up of his body, hand in the frame with his wedding ring and his face and hair burned. Jack takes a couple of short breaths and then looks at the floor. He pulls his head down with both of his hands and silently cries.

An agent tells Taylor that they are still accounting for the hostiles, she and Olivia need to stay there until it’s clear and then they will move her to Anders. Taylor is not moving, she wants to stay at the White House. They need to do what is necessary to make sure she is safe, she’s not going anywhere. She wants the people to know that the President is still in the White House. The agent reluctantly agrees. She asks how many people were killed but it’s too early to tell. They have set up medical treatment for the wounded in the West Wing. Taylor wants to speak to the Vice President as soon as possible and she also wants to know how her husband is doing. She asks him to please call Dr. Lee Schulman at West Arlington hospital. In the background, Pierce is getting patched up and Olivia watches. Taylor asks her daughter how Pierce is and she says they said he would be okay. Taylor asks about Olivia. She looks at her mother and says she’s not sure. She still can’t believe all of this happened. She thought they were going to kill them. She was scared. Taylor gets up and sits next to her daughter and takes her hand. She assures her that they are safe, thanks to a lot of brave people. Another man comes in and says that the Vice President is on the line. Taylor will be right there. Olivia asks if she meant what she said before about putting the past behind them. Taylor did mean it, she doesn’t want to lose her again. Taylor kisses Olivia’s cheek and then gets up. Olivia sees Pierce get up and he nods to her as he is led out.

Moss and Renee walk through the White House and Renee stops upon seeing Jack still sitting near Bill’s body. She slowly comes up to Jack and stands for a second before saying that the President is safe, she is secure in the residence. Jack stares at Buchanan some more and then snaps up to look at Renee, and then back. She says quietly, ‘I’m so sorry, Jack. I know he was your friend.’ Jack rasps, ‘It was supposed to be me.’ Renee stares and Jack continues, ‘I was supposed to set off the explosion so he could secure the President.’ Renee looks on and says that he died protecting his country. Jack says, ‘Yeah.’ and blinks back more tears. He slowly gets up and then looks to Renee. He takes a few steps toward Moss and says that this isn’t over. He calls Larry and tells him and Renee that Juma and his men were not working alone. Jack fills them in on what Buchanan told them, while Jack was in the lockdown with the President he heard Juma on a satellite phone with someone from the outside. He doesn’t know who it was but he knows that this isn’t over and the President isn’t safe. Moss asks if Jack is sure Buchanan heard right. Jack stares at Moss for a few seconds and tells him coldly, ‘He wouldn’t have told me if he wasn’t sure.’ Their only lead is Burnett, he knew about the attack on the White House and he probably knows who Juma was talking to. Moss will go and talk to him but Jack says no. Taylor offered him immunity and he turned it down, he’s not going to tell Moss anything. Jack knows that Burnett will talk to him, though. Moss asks angrily if that’s because Jack tortured him. Jack will not touch him, he just needs him to think he’s going to finish what he started. He will tell them everything they need to know. Jack pleads with Moss. The last thing Bill asked him to do before he died was for him to follow through with this. Jack owes him that. Moss looks at Renee and Jack gives his word he won’t touch Burnett. Moss understands about his friend but he has standing orders from the President to take him into custody, he has to get Jack back to FBI. Jack looks hard at Moss as he promises that he will look into this. Moss calls Agent Powell to handcuff Mr. Bauer and take him back to the staging area. Jack complies with the order of putting his hands on top of his head but is obviously angry.

Moss and Renee walk away and Renee tries to talk to Moss. Moss cuts her off and says that if she is going to tell her Bauer is right he doesn’t want to hear it. Renee figures this is the problem, he’s not listening to reason. Moss wants to know when she started defending Bauer. She claims she’s not defending him, she’s defending a good idea. Moss will look into it but she has a job t do, finish locking down the building. Jack is led past Renee and Moss leaves.

Renee looks around and then approaches an agent. She wants to talk to the President but is told she will have to go through Kanin. He just arrived and is on his way to see the President. Renee thinks.

Kanin is updated as he walks the hall. The lights come back on and people look around. Kanin is going to be speaking to the Secretary of Defence and the Joint Chiefs as soon as possible. They will be setting up a command post in the residence. Renee stops Kanin, she wants to speak to the President. It’s urgent, she has new intel and it needs to be acted on immediately. Kanin can’t get her to the President but he is listening. Renee relays the information that Jack gave her to Kanin.

Hodges sits at his desk, the name of the company is behind him on the wall: Starkwood. Hodges watches TV and the buzzer goes. The man who enters’ name is Greg and he has information that the President is alive. He has been monitoring interagency chatter and the word is out, Juma is dead and Taylor survived. Hodges asks calmly what he thinks happened. Greg will keep monitoring what’s happening. Hodges sits back and says, ‘You gotta admire the damn bitch. She doesn’t give up easily.’ Hodges doesn’t think he has enough control of the situation. He observes that Greg seems tense. He guides him over and says to do him a favour, have a drink and relax. Hodges pours him a stiff drink. Juma has held up his end of the bargain, everything is on track. The shipment of weapons should be ready for pick up in the next couple of hours. Hodges wants Chapman on the phone so they can nail down some targets.

Jack is led to the staging area, Moss walks near him. An agent tells Moss that the chopper should be there in 10 minutes. Moss assigns the agent to escort Bauer back to FBI and until then he’s to be held in the trailer. Moss’ phone rings and Kanin is calling him. Kanin asks about Jack and Moss says he will be remanded into federal custody after he is debriefed. Kanin asks a confused Moss to put that on hold. He admits that Walker told him that Juma may have been working with someone on the outside. Kanin orders Moss to send Jack Bauer to question Ryan Burnett. Moss looks around incredulously and tells him the thinks this is a mistake. Agent Walker has already shared Moss’ concerns with Kanin but if Burnett knows who Juma was working with, using Bauer is the best way to get the information out of him. Moss argues that Bauer almost killed this man. Kanin was there but they are just going to play on his fears. Bauer’s presence alone should be enough to intimidate Burnett into talking. Moss thinks Bauer is a wild card and they have no idea what he will do when he gets in that room with Burnett. Kanin realizes this and that’s why this is being done under his authority and his authority alone, he is not going through the President because if something goes wrong he wants her protected. Moss asks, ‘With respect, is that because she would never allow this?’ Kanin doesn’t appreciate this and assigns Moss to take Bauer to question Burnett. It’s a direct order. Moss understands. Kanin wants him to supervise every second of the interrogation and get him a full report. Moss is unhappy with this situation.

Taylor talks to Patrick, one of her workers. She wants to speak personally to the families of everyone they lost last night so she wants to be kept in the loop when they are notified. She asks that Angela be sent to help her work on her speech. Patrick says of course and Taylor calls him by name. She asks kindly, ‘You’ve just been through a terrible ordeal. Are you sure you’re okay?’ He smiles and says he’ll be fine; it helps to focus on work. Taylor understands. A knock comes at the door and Kanin is there. Patrick gets up and so does Taylor. Kanin and Taylor meet in the centre of the room and hug. Kanin says, ‘Thank God you’re alright.’ They part and he asks how she is feeling. She sighs and answers, ‘Like I just woke up from a terrible nightmare.’ She says that this was unbelievable. Kanin can’t imagine. He asks how Olivia is and Taylor says she’s okay. They lost a lot of good people tonight and they need all the help they can get. She is thinking about bringing Olivia onto her staff as a special advisor. Kanin understands her not wanting to be separated from her daughter after what happened last night but they need people that are not political liabilities. Taylor is not forgetting what she did during the campaign. Leaking damaging personal information about Taylor’s opponent to the press. Taylor defends her that Olivia knows what she did was wrong, Kanin heats up that it almost cost her the election. Taylor thinks Olivia has changed, they talked about it and Olivia is going to take full responsibility, she has learned from her mistakes. Taylor wants Kanin to talk to her so they can put the past behind them. Kanin tells her outright but kindly that he thinks this is a mistake. Taylor snaps back, ‘I don’t care what you think.’ Immediately, Taylor softens and apologizes to Ethan, he knows she didn’t mean that. She tells him kindly that she wants Olivia to join her staff and she wants it to come from him. Kanin asks, ‘Me?’ Taylor thinks it’s a good way to extend an olive branch and she needs the two of them to make peace. Kanin agrees somewhat reluctantly and Taylor thanks him. Before Ethan can get out the door she asks about Agent Walker who was trying to reach her. Kanin brushes it off as procedural and says he took care of it.

A chopper lands at the FBI staging area and Jack is led to it and put on. He slides over and the agent that follows him buckles Jack in. Jack sees Moss nearby and winces. Renee comes and asks if Larry wanted to see her. He turns and is obviously angry. He just got off the phone with Ethan Kanin. Jack watches them interact from the chopper, obviously able to read what’s going on. Renee tries to explain that she didn’t want to go behind Moss’ back but she didn’t have a choice. Moss starts to repeat her and then simply says, ‘You could have chosen to follow orders. Renee apologizes but Moss doesn’t think she is sorry. She tells Moss, ‘I’ve seen Jack do some terrible things today, things that I still can’t justify, but he’s been right every time. I can’t help but think if we stayed out of his way none of this would have happened.’ She is sorry she went behind his back but she promises that this play with Burnett will go down just the way Jack says. Moss catches on and tells her, ‘If you think you’re going with Bauer you’re out of your mind.’ Moss may have been given an order by the White House but he is still running this operation. Moss is taking Bauer to see Burnett and Renee is going back to FBI. She is to clean out her desk and turn in her badge, she has been suspended indefinitely. Renee is surprised and appeals to Moss, she knows he is upset but he needs her. ‘I need people I can trust’ he answers, ‘I thought that was you.’ He turns his back to her and heads to the chopper with Jack.

Jack doesn’t look at Moss, instead he watches out the window as they take off. Moss speaks to Jack saying, ‘You may think you got what you wanted getting Renee to go behind by back, but Kanin ordered me to let you question Burnett.’ Moss will be watching every second and if he does something Moss doesn’t like he will be finished. Moss asks if Jack understands and he answers a military style, ‘Understood.’ Moss looks away and Jack tells him, ‘You should leave Renee out of this. She’s just doing what she thought was right.’ Moss answers that she may have lost her job over it. Jack abruptly tells Larry, ‘She’s the best agent you’ve got.’ Moss stands by his decision, ‘She circumvented my authority, I can’t ignore that.’ Moss thinks aloud, “You know, I’ve known this woman for nine years and I’ve never seen her do the kind of things she’s done in the last nine hours.” Jack turns his head to look at Moss and then back out the front of the chopper.

Hodges gets briefed by Greg. They have narrowed to 12 targets within the Eastern seaboard, within 300 kilometres of the base. There are 10 to 15 thousand people around each target and the kill ratio is as high as 80%. Hodges hopes they never have to find out. He wants the coordinates down to tac-op’s so they can program them in. Greg has intercepted a flash from the FBI, Jack Bauer is on his way to Kennedy Memorial to question Burnett. Hodges asks how that’s possible. He got an executive order giving access. Bauer is going to finish what he started and Burnett will tell him everything. Greg has already sent someone to deal with Burnett and he will take care of Bauer at the same time. Hodges asks who he sent, Greg sent Quinn. Hodges muses, “Quinn’s good. Bauer’s good too.”

An agent briefs Moss and Jack as they walk through the hospital. He has locked down the entire floor. Burnett’s room has two cameras and audio surveillance. Jack asks where he is and the agent says down the hall, it’s going to be a minute; the doctor has to revive him. Moss asks why, what happened. The agent says he was given a heavy sedative; he was in pretty bad shape when he got there. Jack looks at the equipment as the doctor arrives. He understands they are there to interrogate his patient. He is still recovering from his last interrogation. If they are there to brutalize him again, he will not be part of it. Jack tells the doctor coldly that he was involved in the terrorist attack on the White House and effort to kill the President of the United States. They believe the people he is working with would like to try it again, so if he’s got a problem, Moss cuts Jack off assuring the doctor that they won’t harm him. Jack just looks at Moss who says this is a controlled interrogation. They need his cooperation. Jack watches closely before the doctor says it will take him a couple of minutes to come out of it. The doctor leaves and Moss gets closer to Jack watching the monitor as the doctor goes to Burnett’s bedside.

Quinn comes through the hospital in blue scrubs. He has a belt style pack over his shoulder and heads into one of the rooms. He puts down his stuff and an old man is in the room watching. He asks who Quinn is. He says he’s a friend and asks for the man’s name. It’s Robert. Quinn peruses his file and asks if he’s recovering from heart surgery. Quinn asks if he has a wife or kids, he doesn’t. There’s another man in the room who is intubated and sleeping. He asks about him and Robert says he has lots of grandkids. With a smile he says they make a hell of a noise when they visit. Quinn comes closer to Robert and then grabs a pillow putting it over his face. Robert struggles and finally gives up, his monitors beep. Quinn puts the pillow back and leaves the room. Nurses out at the station get the alert and call for a crash cart. Quinn uses the chance that they are gone to plug his PDA into the terminal. He types a couple of words on the keyboard and the information on the screen is mimicked on his PDA. He now has the security grid and he focuses in on one of the rooms. He unplugs the PDA and takes off as a man in the same colour scrubs comes by with a crash cart. Quinn enters another room and after referencing his PDA looks up and reaches up to the ceiling. He brings down a panel and puts his stuff up first. Quinn then grabs a box to stand on and lifts himself up into the ceiling as well.

At the desk, Jack still watches Burnett on the screen.

Olivia heads over to Pierce and asks how his arm is. He is leaning back shirtless near other injured with an IV. He says he should be back on his feet in a couple of hours. He asks about her. She smiles and says it’s nothing a little Aspirin won’t take care of. She came to thank him for what he did. Pierce shakes his head and before he can speak she says, ‘You took a bullet for me, you saved my life.’ Pierce tells her, ‘There’s no need to thank me.’ She smiles, ‘Right, you were just doing your job. Only in this case it wasn’t really your job since you retired four years ago.’ He looks to the ceiling and answers, ‘Yes ma'am, that’s true.’ Olivia asks, ‘Do you mind if I ask you why?’ He doesn’t respond but his expression changes. She asks, ‘Did it have to do with Martha Logan?’ He looks back at Olivia and tells her, “Martha and I were,” he nods, “close.” She tells him, “It must have been hard for you, what happened to her.” He cuts her off, without anger, but says firmly, ‘I’d prefer not to talk about it.’ She apologizes and he says she doesn’t have to. They stare at each other for another few seconds and she smiles. ‘I hope you won’t be a stranger, Agent Pierce.’ He thanks her and she turns to leave. Before she does he finishes, ‘And, it’s Aaron.’ Smiling again, Olivia says, “Okay, Aaron, you get some rest.” She leaves him and tells her Secret Service Agent that she’d like to head back to the residence now. They get outside of the room and Kanin is there. He stops her and asks if they can talk for a minute. She says sure and Kanin gets right to the point. This administration has just suffered some terrible losses and they need help. The President and he are wondering if she would consider coming on board as a special advisor to the President. Olivia is kind of surprised that he would sign off on this. Kanin is ready to put this behind him, as is the President. Olivia admits she overstepped her bounds during the campaign, Kanin is glad she sees it that way. Olivia is not concerned about the past, it’s what is happening right now and since her mother took office. Kanin gets defensive asking, ‘Excuse me?’ Olivia asks him coldly, ‘Do you think any of this would have happened if my mother had a chief advisor who knew what the hell was going on in her administration.’ Kanin is confused and asks what she is talking about. Olivia clears it up that the government is corrupted on every level and it all happened right under his nose. She thinks he has to admit that it’s an unconscionable failure on his part. She is surprised that he hasn’t tenured his resignation. Kanin claims she has no right to speak to him this way, he doesn’t know what she is talking about. She has no facts for back this up. Olivia says she intends to get the facts and she is going to find out exactly who failed her mother and then make sure that person is never in a position to do it again. She excuses herself and gets up. Kanin is left to think on his own.

Jack is ready to go into see Burnett. Moss stops Jack by putting a hand on his chest. He warns Jack that he will be watching and if he lays one finger on Burnett it’s over. Jack looks down at Moss’s hand on him and says full of sarcasm, ‘Right.’ Moss takes his hand away and Jack leaves. Quinn is up in the rafters.

Jack is let in the room with Burnett and the doctor pauses and then says he’s coming around. Jack grumbles, ‘Good.’ The doctor leaves and Jack closes the door. Back at the desk an agent listens with headphones and watches. Moss is right at his shoulder.

Jack appears calm and leans into Burnett. He quietly tells him to wake up. Jack repeats the command louder this time and Burnett snaps out of his sleep. Jack asks him, ‘Remember me?’ Burnett looks to Jack who stares coldly back. Burnett focuses and then starts to panic immediately. ‘Oh my God’ he gasps as he tries to move away from Jack. He asks what he is doing there. Jack explains that he just came from the White House. Juma failed and is dead, as well as his men. Jack keeps talking, ‘A lot of innocent people died today, good people, including a friend of mine, Bill Buchanan. You might have met him.’ Jack paces around the room and Burnett wants Jack to stay away from him. Burnett wants his lawyer, now and he wants Jack out of there. Jack almost smiles while saying, ‘I’m not going anywhere, it’s just you and me, pal. Burnett starts to yell to get someone in there but Jack takes off his tie and methodically wraps it around his hand while saying that they are not coming for him. Burnett begs him not to kill him, he will tell him anything he wants to hear. Burnett is ready to talk, he will tell Jack everything. Jack tells him that they are done talking, that’s why they sent him. Burnett says this is not legal. Outside, the sound dies on the video feed. Moss nearly panics right away. He asks what happened. The agent says they lost the sound.

Inside, Jack is still monologuing to Burnett about the fact that there are no lawyers, he aided and abetted terrorists and tried to kill the President of the United States. The rules don’t apply to you. Burnett is pleading that they can’t do this to him and Jack yells at him to shut up. The screen has split and we have also been watching Quinn working on the lines in the ceiling.

Outside, the agent with Moss figures it could be a glitch in the line.

Quinn pulls up one of the ceiling panels on one end and a silver pen-sized object rolls off and down onto the floor behind Jack. Jack turns and sees it as it starts to hiss. Jack walks over to investigate but as soon as he gets close he lets out a yell and staggers to the wall going down with his hand over his heart, tie still there. Burnett is feeling the effects of this as well. Quinn pulls the panel completely and lowers himself into the room with Jack and Burnett. Jack can’t do anything but watch Quinn grab a metal canister and smash the door panel. He smashes the glass in the front of some drawers with the same canister and takes a large piece out. He places the glass in Jack’s hand while he can do nothing but drool. He hits Jack as he walks away and he slides down the wall further over onto his side. Quinn is wearing gloves and wraps the glass in a towel. He goes to Burnett and cuts a straight line across his neck and then sticks the piece of glass into his chest. Jack is heard in the background grunting.

Outside, Moss wants the agent to fix the thing as they again watch Jack take off his tie.

Quinn wipes off Burnett’s drool and tosses the towel into a sink. He walks away and Burnett monitor is flashing and wailing a flat line zero.

Moss’ screen fuzzes and flips back over to the live feed. Seeing Burnett dead he drops the headset and takes off at a sprint, the other agent in tow. Moss draws his weapon as he runs.

Jack snaps out of his trance with a start. He gasps heavily and coughs. He looks panicked while he sits up.

Moss raps on the door calling Bauer. The agent says he has jammed the electric panel.

Jack stares at Burnett taking in the gravity of his situation. Moss calls him from outside and Jack can only do one thing. He hops up on a ledge and pops out a ceiling panel following Quinn up into the rafters.

In the split screen we see Jack getting up there, Renee packing, Olivia, Taylor, Moss trying to get in by kicking the door in.

Moss finally gets into the room and sees Burnett with his own eyes. He commands them to have security lock down the hospital and put out a highest priority APB for Jack Bauer. All agencies.

Jack jumps down from the rafters, we see Quinn already making his way out of the hospital. Jack finds a security worker who is watching the video security feeds. He knocks him out from behind and steals his phone as well as removing the disc from the burner drive on the desktop.

Greg’s phone rings. It’s Quinn calling in and he’s done. Greg relays the message to Hodges. He says that Burnett is dead and everybody is going to think that Bauer killed Burnett. Nobody will know that they were involved. Hodges is satisfied. He sits back and says, ‘Now we’re having some fun.’

Moss’ phone rings and Jack speaks right away. He begs him to listen as he walks out the back of the hospital. Jack tells Moss that he didn’t kill Burnett, he was set up. He explains that there was a nerve agent that immobilized him. A man came through the ceiling and killed Burnett. He is not lying, he watched him do it. Moss wants Jack to come back in if he’s innocent but Jack can’t do that. Moss thinks Jack can if he is innocent but Jack says no, there’s a reason why they framed him and didn’t kill him. They want Moss to be distracted with him so they can finish what they started. Jack tells Moss not to let them get away with this, it’s not over. Jack hangs up and sees a couple of police cars drive by.

Moss calls into the phone for Jack but gives up and hangs up the connection. Moss looks around and yells, ‘Dammit!’

Jack stops the direction he is running when he sees cops driving by. Jack takes off running down a back alley into the dark.

Miscellaneous Thoughts:

-Vice President Mitchell Hayworth seems to be an interesting character. I’m not sure we’d actually heard his name until we saw him on screen. I for one, certainly didn’t know his first or last name.

-He’s another drop in the ‘damn, we keep picking long names’ bucket. Hayworth – this kind of pain to type name actually makes me happy for people like Moss. 3 different letters.

-Again, no Tony’s in the previouslys. I’m going to get pretty angry if they brought him back to sit on his ass for hours and then they kill him. Actually, I’d be mad if they killed him if he got all the screen time with Jack. Either way, if he dies again, I’m going to be one ticked fan.

-That was a good cut for the President there.

-It must be weird to watch a news report about your own location. Must be a little surreal.

-Wow, those must be some spectacular spotters that Moss has at watching the White House for them NOT to see the signal Olivia tried to send out last hour. ‘Code Green’ wasn’t that long and she got a good couple of flashes out before the guy got a hold of her. Some spotter is SO fired when they hear about this since that combined with what they already know would probably convince Hayworth to let them move on the White House.

-I would think that now is hardly the time for Olivia to air all her dirty laundry to her mother. Although, I guess it could be a now or never situation.

-That was the fastest opening of canisters. There was about 30 seconds of time between when we saw Jack with the President and when the door opened. Wow.

-Line of the week: Jack to Senator Meyer: “Shut Up.” My thoughts exactly, Jack.

-Jack worry for Jack is sweet. In case we weren’t sure he was going to die, that was basically the tell sign.

-That’s a nasty cut on Buchanan’s cheek, although, I guess he’s got some other nasty things coming too.

-That’s some serious bad karma for Jack and Buchanan to end up that close to Meyer. Jack should have just clocked him.

-Taylor definitely has the right idea, here. Negotiating the release of the hostages like that made me happy and proved that she is a strong person and President. Thinking about the hostages first. Too bad it totally backfired for her.

-Even though I saw someone get killed in the trailer for this episode at the hand of Juma, I didn’t expect him to ‘release’ the hostages quite like that. I just figured it would be more complicated than that. I’m not complaining, in fact, I loved it because it really did shock me.

-Juma is chilling. Very well done. He’s way better as a bad guy than he was as the cop in Season 3 that interrogated Julia Milliken (shudder – what a terrible storyline.) In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, by the way, it’s the same actor.

-Anyone else think that Juma was going to slap the President again when she called him a son of a bitch?

-As much as Moss frustrates me sometimes, he is probably right about Juma’s motives. He surely would have killed Taylor if they hadn’t intervened.

-Jack is sharp as a tack but he’s pretending to be sharp as a spoon when Buchanan explains to him about the outside involvement. Anyone could see that Buchanan was about to sacrifice himself. Why else would he be telling Jack, out of anyone, what he heard? Jack was the one who was supposed to die. If its information you want acted on, the person you DON’T tell is the person about to commit suicide. Jack just didn’t seem to put it together fast enough. Bad for our hero to be thick. Or good time depending how you look at it.

-One of the most potent things written about Jack and Buchanan was the way Jack tried to stop him from going. Jack actually got a piece of Buchanan but not enough to stop him from setting off the explosive.

-Quite the time for Moss to grow a pair. I guess it was literally then or never.

-I’m curious to see if this will come back and bite Moss in the ass. He went against a direct order from Hayworth. IN the end it was the right choice, but still.

-I’m also curious if Hayworth will get flack for his lack of action.

-Did Jack take note that Pierce was wounded? I guess he’s still getting around okay, adrenaline is a wonderful thing.

-That whole White House sequence was very dark. At first I was having some trouble deciding who was who after the lights went out.

-And again, Pierce does what he needs to do with the gun. He’s an agent and will do what is necessary but it’s so easy to forget since he’s such a nice guy.

-Classic that Jack saved Mayer. I guess in the end, an ‘innocent’ life in an innocent life. Meyer is a senator and Jack had to save him, even though it would have solved a lot of problems for Jack if he was dead.

-Meyer’s nice and brave there, begging for his life the instant its in jeopardy. He and Jack are certainly on different ends of the spectrum.

-Meyer’s expression is nice and unreadable after Jack kills Juma. Really, he should be doing a little dance because he gets to live.

-There were some great moments when Jack went to Buchanan’s body. It was so well shot with everything happening around Jack, the only thing he is focusing on is Buchanan. There’s still all kinds of mayhem but Jack is just dealing with his emotions, slow and steady.

-Jack is such an intense person. He has intense anger, love, hate, passion, devotion and sadness. It was so sad seeing him mourn Buchanan. So well acted.

-Nice place for Buchanan’s hand to land, with the wedding ring in plain view. Just in case we weren’t sure that he did indeed have something to live for.

-The choice Buchanan made was an interesting one. For him to sacrifice himself for Jack to investigate the leads was a brave thing to do. Jack felt that this was his chance to ‘die for something’ as we saw from Jack in Season 6. Buchanan knows that Jack can chase down this lead even though beyond that Jack has nothing else to live for. No family, friends are outlaws, daughter hates him. The list goes on (and on and on and on and…)

-Ah, the silent clock. The sacred goodbye on 24.

-Just an afterthought about Buchanan's death and the resons behind it. Upon a rewatch of the episodes leading to this, it became obvious to me that Buchanan sacrificed himself because he couldn't bring himself to torture Burnett. Jack pressed all the buttons to try and get Bill to interrogate Burnett but in the end, those are what caused him to sacrifice himself. He didn't interrogate Burnett or allow Jack to and thus the attack took place. It wasn't fair for Jack to die when Bill could have stopped it the whole situation. Jack told him that those who do nothing might as well be helping the terrorists because that what Bill told him. That's what Buchanan believed and by not interrogating Burnett, he allowed the terroists to proceed. And he wanted to fix it. Unfortunatly, Jack will probably see this on his own conscience in the end.

-People that say Buchanan is still alive (yes they are out there), I say no. Tony yes, Buchanan no. Although, I’d love to see Buchanan again, I love Buchanan. He’s a great character, Morrison is a great actor. He’s a spectacular rock for Jack but he’s gone. Such is life (and death) in 24.

-I love how they’ve gone back to the original season 1 concept of multiple boxes showing the same people. Especially when the person in question in Jack.

-Taylor is channelling Palmer by not wanting to show weakness by moving.

-I would also like to know how Taylor’s husband is doing but I guess that’s need to know information and we don’t need to know.

-In the aftermath of all of this it hardly seems right for Olivia to be saying she might not be okay. Buchanan just died, Pierce got shot and she’s ‘not sure’. Typical.

-How’s that for feeling something for Renee. Jack obviously feels a lot for Buchanan and she is there to witness it and then witness the compartmentalization of it while Jack continues his mission. He does what he needs to do.

-Renee looks surprised that Jack was going to sacrifice himself for Taylor. Obviously, she doesn’t know Jack. Even a President that is ready to put Jack in jail isn’t enough to make him not sacrifice his life for her.

-I’m impressed that Jack didn’t haul off and hit Larry when he questioned Buchanan’s judgement.

-Loved the inflection in Jack’s voice when he tells Moss that Burnett won’t tell him anything. He emphasized the ‘you’ like Moss was something really disgusting.

-Wow, Jack didn’t stir up some shit when he was getting arrested. That’s impressive. We haven’t seen Jack tazered yet this year.

-I really actually didn’t care for the bitch line at all from Hodges. I don’t know why but it just seemed out of place. It was weird because I don’t usually get any kind of feeling like that from this show, or anything for that matter.

-I did however really enjoy him convincing Greg to have a drink. I’m lovin’ it (and all of a sudden am craving McDonald’s)

-Someone needs to pin a medal on that clown that said the lights were up. Thank you Captain Obvious.

-I guess there’s no way that Kanin could have made it sound like he heard about this whole Jack/Burnett thing from someone other than Renee.

-Kanin is nice and blunt with Moss. He’s really starting to grow on me, which probably means that he’s on the death list.

-Love how Jack is referred to as a ‘wild card’. Everyone is scared of letting him do his thing.

-I can’t believe that Moss was blunt enough with Kanin that he would ask him if he is keeping this away from Taylor because he knows she would never say yes.

-So Jack is now Larry’s responsibility. Great. This should be interesting.

-I wonder if we’ll get to see Taylor talk to Karen Hayes about Buchanan’s death.

-Taylor just seems like a nice person. The way she makes sure Patrick is okay was really just nice.

-That was quite a nice little moment between Taylor and Kanin. I can’t help but maybe read a little more into that. Call me dirty, I mean, crazy.

-Too bad Taylor didn’t name Buchanan when she talked about the good people they lost.

-I can already see that this idea that Taylor has about bringing Olivia on staff is going to end in total and complete disaster. I just hope it gets there quickly because this is a potential screen time waster.

-I can’t figure out if it’s great or terrible writing for Taylor to ask Kanin to extend an olive branch to Olivia. It just feels lazy to me.

-Taylor seems level headed but I can’t see any good thing coming from her brining Olivia on staff.

-When Taylor snaps it’s interesting to see her angry side. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that.

-At first I was a little confused as to what the FBI agent was doing to Jack in the chopper.

-At least Renee can see that the best thing they can do to help Jack is to not impede him.

-Moss needs to check his feelings at the door here. He’s only suspending Renee because it’s Jack she went to help. He needs to suck it up.

-Moss is right, though. If he can’t trust her in their line of work, he has nothing.

-Moss’ little speech to Jack is code for, “you can’t steal my girlfriend.’

-I, for one, (and from the sounds of it, the ONLY one), don’t want Jack to steal Moss’ girlfriend. Bad scene.

-Nice of Jack to defend Renee after everything she’s done for him today.

-Line of the week contender, Moss to Jack: “I’ve known this woman for nine years and I’ve never seen her do the kind of things she’s done in the last nine hours”. Welcome to Knowing Jack Bauer 101. Lesson #1 – Things You Didn’t Think You Were Capable of You Are Suddenly Able to Do.

-Wonder what Hodges is planning. Sounds evil. Perfect.

-Line of the week contender: Hodges to Greg: “Quinn’s good, Bauer’s good too.”

-Hodges has a great air of evil about him.

-There’s the evidence of the difference between Jack and Moss. Jack is ready to go after the doctor while Moss reasons him out. Both are effective, Jack’s is just faster.

-If looks could kill, Meyer would have been killed by Jack this hour as well as Moss when he cuts Jack off to the doctor.

-Controlled interrogation. Is that something that is possible with Jack?

-What Quinn did to that old guy was brutal. Nasty and brutal. I almost couldn’t watch. I like the way he prioritizes them though.

-I kind of hoped they saved Robert.

-Only in 24 can a gunshot wound get you ‘back on your feet in a couple of hours.’ Classic.

-Pierce is so classy. He just is all about saving people.

-I would really like to know what happened to Martha. I guess maybe we can assume she was locked up for murdering or attempting to murder her ex husband. Would they give her the death penalty for that if she killed him?

-Even after she called on the name of Martha, Pierce still likes Olivia enough to have her call him Aaron. That was sweet.

-As much as I like Olivia with Pierce, the exact thing is inverted when I see her with Kanin. I like Kanin and I don’t think he deserves what she is dishing out to him.

-I agree that she has no right to talk to Kanin like that. He’s 3 times her age, she should at least be respecting her elders.

-Nice touch with Moss and his hand on Jack’s chest to stop him and then preaching to him about touching Burnett.

-Jack should have dropped Moss right there.

-Burnett’s panic is spectacular. Nice work.

-For some reason, Burnett didn’t seem all that bad when Jack interrogated him at the White House. The shape he is in doesn’t seem to reflect the severity of his interrogation.

-Love how Jack brought up Buchanan. Hopefully they keep bringing him up and make his death part of the motivation for the day.

-Jack’s plan sure worked. Burnett was ready to give Jack anything.

-So, why didn’t Jack start asking for answers earlier? They might have gotten something useful out of him.

-That might be a record, Jack gets two shut up’s in an episode.

-Anyone think that a tip off might be that Jack took his tie off twice? Was Moss even paying attention?

-That’s a crummy gas that Quinn puts in the room with Jack and Burnett. Scary seeing Jack like that.

-You know, Kiefer can do anything. Unreal. There are no bounds to how far he will push in the name of Jack. When you can drool like that for a character, that’s commitment. By the way, the consistency of that screams drool. I think it’s real.

-Maybe he is mimicking all the women watching and drooling over Jack.

-That was very gory seeing Quinn kill Burnett. Nasty. The fact that he was watching was even more disgusting.

-Does Moss really think he’d be able to take Jack? I’d be running AWAY from the room.

-Just when I’m so impressed with Kiefer’s acting, he portrays extremely convincing fear for Jack when he snaps out of the effects of the gas. We don’t see that much from Jack.

-Could it have taken more tries for Moss to kick the door in?

-Since when do they have electric code panels on the doors at hospitals?

-Perfect Dammit from Moss. He does a great job with that but he’s certainly no Jack.

-Such a Bond feel to the end of this episode, with Jack running down the dark alley in a suit. Very well done. He should be dialling Tony about now.

-Jack against the world, perfect.
